2021 Reading Goals

In my previous post, I discussed my progress for last year (all-in-all, a year of good reading). For many people, a contributing factor would be the pandemic. The nature of my day job didn’t change all that much for me—I count myself extremely fortunate in that regard. What do I do in 2021? I’ll keep my goals short, but I’ll also add in stretch goals to see if I can push the boundaries. I’m task-oriented, after all.

Read 80 books in 2021. I read 77 books in 2020, so I’m confident I can read 80. Stretch goal: 85+ books.

  1. Continue to read through the Culture series, I read Excession last year and I’ve just picked up Inversions and hope to read at least 1 or 2 books this year. Stretch goal: Finish the series (total of 10 books).

  2. Read at least 20 Indie books. I’ve found some outstanding books in the Indie author space, and I’ve got leads on other excellent series. Stretch goal: half of the books I read in 2021 are Indie published.

  3. Read a complete epic fantasy series. I’ve read a lot of ‘first in series’ this year that’s given me a taste for many author works. I want to dive into some series that are 3 or more books. I gave up on the Wheel of Time series while it was still being written, so I may reread that series. Another contender is Tad Williams’ Osten Ard series. I enjoyed Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn portion and there’s a new trilogy and a bridge novel. It would interest me to revisit and see how this author’s writing has developed in the intervening decades. I’m open to other, newer series with an eye for world building, characters, and expansive stories. Epic. Stretch goal: Read a long series (6+ books) OR two epic fantasy series that total 6 or more books combined.

Those are my reading goals for 2021. What are you going to read this year? Are you planning to read a lot or just a few books? Comment or drop me a line!
